Coaster Con XL Part 2 – SeaWorld San Antonio & ZDT’s Amusement Park

SeaWorld San Antonio   On Wednesday, June 21 ACE Coaster Con XL moved to SeaWorld San Antonio in San Antonio, TX.  This was my second visit to this park, but I only got to spend part of the day last time.  This was the first SeaWorld park to have 4 coasters.  It is located around a large lake, so walking from place to place takes a while.   Wave Breaker: The Rescue Coaster (Intamin Family Launch Coaster, 2017) New for 2017, this double launch family coaster simulates missions to rescue animals that are in trouble. It begins with an indoor […]

ACE Coaster Con XL Part 1 – Six Flags Fiesta Texas Continued

Rockville This 1950s themed section has great detail including traffic lights that are timed weirdly. BATMAN: The Ride:  (S&S Free Spin 4-D Coaster, 2014) This was my first time to ride this. It does spin wildly but is not painful like the larger ZacSpin models.  However, it does still throw you around a good bit, so it was not as fun as I had hoped – 5 rides during ERT. Poltergeist: (Premier, LIM Coaster, 1999) From its themed station to its launch to its poltergeist-like speed, this is a great ride. It is the same model as several other indoor […]

ACE Coaster Con XL Part 1 – Six Flags Fiesta Texas

On Sunday, June 18 ACE Coaster Con XL began at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, TX. This was my third visit to this park with both previous visits just being for about a day, so I was looking forward to spending more time here. Built in a rock quarry, the park uses the high rock cliffs to the advantage of several of its coasters and other rides. It is one of the nicest themed parks in the chain as it was developed in 1992 by Gaylord Entertainment, the owners of Opryland, as more of an entertainment park with […]

Coaster Con XL – Prologue: Schlitterbahn

On June 18, 2017, the fortieth ACE Coaster Con began in San Antonio, TX.This year’s host parks were Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World San Antonio and ZDT’s Amusement Park. A regional event was held at Schlitterbahn WaterPark in New Braunfels, TX on the Friday evening and Saturday prior to Con. Regional events at Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Pier and Schlitterbahn Galveston were held following the event.  As much of this was covered in the 2011 Con trip report, I will make this report briefer than usual.   Since my visit in 2011 I have wanted to get […]

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 5: La Feria Chapultepec Magico & Perimágico

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 5: La Feria Chapultepec Magico & Perimágico La Feria Chapultepec Magico Our final day in Mexico included a trip to the other large Mexico City amusement park, La Feria Chapultepec Magico, located in a large city park.  Opened in 1964, it is the city’s traditional amusement park.  I was looking forward to this as it has the third and final of the world’s Mobius wood coasters for me to get to.   Montaña Rusa (Roller Coaster): (NAD, Wood Mobius Racer, 1964) A Mobius coaster is a twin track coaster that only has one […]

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 4: Six Flags Mexico

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 4:  Six Flags Mexico Six Flags Mexico Opened in 1979, it operated under Reino Aventura and Nuevo Reino Aventura through 1999, when Six Flags purchased it and renamed it Six Flags Mexico.  This was the last of the remaining Six Flags park currently operating for me to get to, so I was looking forward to it.  It is themed to several different countries and themes including Pueblo Mexicano, Pueblo Frances, Pueblo Polinesio, Pueblo Suizo, Pueblo Vaquero (Old West), Villa Hollywood and El Circo de Bugs Bunny, but oddly there is not a Spanish […]

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 3: Sightseeing at Teotihuacan & Mexico City

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 3: Sightseeing at Teotihuacan & Mexico City Teotihuacan One of the different things about this trip was that we had a full day of sightseeing included. On previous international trips we had sometimes include a short stop for some type of sightseeing or even were given enough time to explore on our own, but this is the first ACE international trip that I have done that included a full day of sightseeing.  Our morning agenda was to go to Teotihuacan, about an hour outside of Mexico City.  This was the largest pre-Hispanic city […]

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 2: Selva Mágica

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 2: Selva Mágica Selva Mágica On Wednesday, April 19 our second and final day of the add-on trip began with a ride to Selva Mágica in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, which is translated as Magic Jungle. This was my main reason for wanting to do the add-on portion of the trip.  The park has 2 Schwarzkopf coasters plus the only ride from Sansei Yusoki Co. built in North America, a steel out and back that operated at the defunct Boblo Island in Ontario.  In addition the park looked like it had some unique character […]

ACE South of the Border 2017 Part 1: Bosque Mágico and Parque Plaza Sesamo

ACE South of the Border 2017 Trip Report While I have travelled a good bit in Europe and Canada over the last few years, I had never been to Mexico. Concern for safety has always made it a destination I have been somewhat apprehensive of visiting, but hoped that someday I would be able to make the trip with a group. I seriously considered the Coaster Zombies trip in 2014 but in the end decided not to go. So when ACE announced the South of the Border trip for spring 2017, I jumped at the chance. While I wanted to […]
