Dakotas Trip & ACE Summer Conference 2017 – Part 2 – South & North Dakota Plus Montana & Wyoming

Storybook Land On Sunday, August 13, we headed west into South Dakota to Storybook Land in Aberdeen, SD, stopping for lunch at a Taco John’s, which I really enjoyed.  We arrived at Storybook Land at 1:00.  Operating since 1976, this kiddie park inside a city park is beautiful and charming.  It has free admission and you pay for the rides.  Statues of fairy tales and nursery rhymes are placed throughout the park.  A castle sits in the middle of the park.  A wildlife area in the back of the park is accessible by foot and visible from the train.   […]

Dakotas Trip and ACE Summer Conference 2017 – Part 1 – Minnesota

When ACE announced the Summer Conference in 2017 would be in Iowa and Minnesota, Richard Bostic, David Lipnicky and I decided it would be a good opportunity to do a tour through North Dakota and South Dakota to Mount Rushmore.  With South Dakota as the only state in the continental U.S. I was missing, it became a good opportunity to get that credit.  In addition to South Dakota, Richard had also never been to North Dakota.  Our plan was to start in Minnesota, then work our way through South Dakota to North Dakota, then back to South Dakota for Mount […]

Coaster Con XL Part 2 – SeaWorld San Antonio & ZDT’s Amusement Park

SeaWorld San Antonio   On Wednesday, June 21 ACE Coaster Con XL moved to SeaWorld San Antonio in San Antonio, TX.  This was my second visit to this park, but I only got to spend part of the day last time.  This was the first SeaWorld park to have 4 coasters.  It is located around a large lake, so walking from place to place takes a while.   Wave Breaker: The Rescue Coaster (Intamin Family Launch Coaster, 2017) New for 2017, this double launch family coaster simulates missions to rescue animals that are in trouble. It begins with an indoor […]

ACE Coaster Con XL Part 1 – Six Flags Fiesta Texas Continued

Rockville This 1950s themed section has great detail including traffic lights that are timed weirdly. BATMAN: The Ride:  (S&S Free Spin 4-D Coaster, 2014) This was my first time to ride this. It does spin wildly but is not painful like the larger ZacSpin models.  However, it does still throw you around a good bit, so it was not as fun as I had hoped – 5 rides during ERT. Poltergeist: (Premier, LIM Coaster, 1999) From its themed station to its launch to its poltergeist-like speed, this is a great ride. It is the same model as several other indoor […]

ACE Coaster Con XL Part 1 – Six Flags Fiesta Texas

On Sunday, June 18 ACE Coaster Con XL began at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, TX. This was my third visit to this park with both previous visits just being for about a day, so I was looking forward to spending more time here. Built in a rock quarry, the park uses the high rock cliffs to the advantage of several of its coasters and other rides. It is one of the nicest themed parks in the chain as it was developed in 1992 by Gaylord Entertainment, the owners of Opryland, as more of an entertainment park with […]

Coaster Con XL – Prologue: Schlitterbahn

On June 18, 2017, the fortieth ACE Coaster Con began in San Antonio, TX.This year’s host parks were Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World San Antonio and ZDT’s Amusement Park. A regional event was held at Schlitterbahn WaterPark in New Braunfels, TX on the Friday evening and Saturday prior to Con. Regional events at Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Pier and Schlitterbahn Galveston were held following the event.  As much of this was covered in the 2011 Con trip report, I will make this report briefer than usual.   Since my visit in 2011 I have wanted to get […]
