Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip – Part 4: Knott’s Berry Farm & Adventure City

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip – Part 4: Knott’s Berry Farm & Adventure City Knott’s Berry Farm On Tuesday, August 2 we headed to the next park on our trip, Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA.  Operating since 1940, this was a berry farm long before that.  In addition to growing berries, the Knotts opened a restaurant to serve fried chicken to visitors, and it soon became so popular that guests were waiting a long time for a table.  To help guests from getting bored during their wait, Walter Knott built a Ghost Town attraction adjacent to […]

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip – Part 3: Disneyland Resort

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip – Part 3: Disneyland Resort Disneyland When Southern California was suggested, Richard immediately said we should go to Disneyland.  He had done the two Disney parks, Knott’s Berry Farm and flown home in 1 day in 2007, so he really wanted to get back and see what all he missed.  While I have had 2 multiday trips to Disneyland, I am never one to turn down a trip to any Disney park, so I was glad that we set aside two days for this.  We decided not to stay on property as I […]

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip – Part 2: Universal Studios Hollywood & Castle Park

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip – Part 2:  Universal Studios Hollywood & Castle Park Universal Studios Hollywood On Saturday, July 30 we went to Universal Studios Hollywood in Universal City, CA.  Operating since 1964, this is an actual working studio around which an amusement park has been developed, making this park unique among the many movie themed parks worldwide, most of which were built just with a movies theme.  David had not been to this park, and it was an opportunity for all of us to see the newly opened Harry Potter themed section and compare it to […]

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip & ACE Preservation Conference 2016 – Part 1: SeaWorld & Belmont

Southern California, Utah & Nevada Coaster Trip & ACE Preservation Conference 2016 – Part 1: SeaWorld San Diego & Belmont Park When it was announced that ACE would hold a Preservation Conference at Lagoon in Salt Lake City, UT, I knew I wanted to make a return visit to this historic, traditional park.  As I discussed this trip with friends, we determined that such a trip could include Southern California and Nevada.  What started as an idea of a weeklong trip gradually morphed into a week and a half long trip (two weeks for some) as more stops were added […]

ACE Coaster Con XXXIX 2016: Epilogue – Kentucky Kingdom & a Stop at Lake Winnie

ACE Coaster Con XXXIX 2016: Epilogue – Kentucky Kingdom & a Stop at Lake Winnie Kentucky Kingdom – Storm the Kingdom On Friday, June 24 we attended the ACE Midwest regional event Storm the Kingdom at Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, KY.  This park is a success story as it is rare that a park that closes, as this former Six Flags did, ever reopens, but it has.  In 2014 I got to stop for a quick visit a week before it opened to the public and I have been looking for an opportunity to get back.   Storm Chaser: (Rocky […]

ACE Coaster Con XXXIX 2016: Part 2 – Holiday World & Splashing Safari

ACE Coaster Con XXXIX 2016: Part 2 – Holiday World & Splashing Safari On Wednesday June 22 we drove to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, IN for the second part of ACE Coaster Con XXXIX.  Originally opened as Santa Claus Land in 1946, the park has grown to include 4 holiday sections.  The addition of a wood coaster in 1995 helped put this park on the map and subsequent additions have made this a destination for coaster enthusiasts worldwide.  I have been to this park on four previous occasions, but this was my first time to attend […]

ACE Coaster Con XXXIX 2016: Part 1 – Six Flags St. Louis, f/k/a Six Flags Over Mid America

On Sunday, June 19, Coaster Con XXXIX began at Six Flags St. Louis, formerly known as Six Flags Over Mid America, in Eureka, MO.  This is my fourth trip to SFSL and I consider it one of my favorite SF parks.  It was the third and final park built by SF and one of only 3 to carry the true SF theme.  To me this is Six Flags Over Mid America, themed for the six flags that flew over this part of the country: France, Spain, England, U.S.A., Missouri and Illinois.  Today, DC Comics Plaza has replaced Spain; France is […]
