A Long Journey for One Great Coaster: Kings Island & Six Flags Great America – Part 2: Six Flags Great America

Six Flags Great America On Sunday, October 12 I arrived at Six Flags Great America just as the park was opening. I would have all day Sunday and a couple of hours on Monday, Columbus Day, before I had to head home. This was one of the few parks that would be open on Columbus Day, and apparently in Illinois school must be out for the holiday. Before I arrived I had learned that Sunday of Columbus Day weekend was particularly busy, but I wasn’t prepared for the level of busyness I found. In the first 8.5 hours on Sunday […]

A Long Journey for One Great Coaster – Kings Island & Six Flags Great America – Part 1: Kings Island

As I knew this year I would be narrowing down the wood coasters in the U.S. that I have not ridden to single digits, I felt strongly that I needed to ride a Rocky Mountain Construction wood coaster. I made several tentative plans, first to get to Silver Dollar City, then to fly to Chicago, but for a number of reasons my plans didn’t work out. After multiple delays in getting Goliath open at Six Flags Great America, I was reluctant to buy a plane ticket for one coaster that might have a problem. I finally settled on a plan […]

ACE Fall Conference 2014 – Part 2: Fun Spot America Kissimmee & Orlando Plus Legoland & Boardwalk Amusements

Legoland Florida After leaving Busch Gardens Tampa Saturday afternoon Richard and I made a detour in ACE Fall Conference 2014 for a quick stop at Legoland Florida in Winter Haven. Formerly Cyprus Gardens, I visited this attraction as a child as well as during the time that the amusement park was added and it became Cyprus Gardens Adventure Park. Unfortunately I never made it during the brief time that the relocated Starliner (PTC-John Allen, Wood Out & Back, 1966/2007[/2015 hopefully!]) operated. We arrived around 3:30, a little later than I had planned. It was an expensive proposition to pay for […]

ACE Fall Conference 2014 – Part 1: Busch Gardens Tampa

Busch Gardens Tampa On Friday, September 26 ACE Fall Conference 2014 began at Busch Gardens Tampa. I have had several opportunities to visit this beautiful park and I gladly welcomed a return visit. The large number of animal exhibits works nicely with its theme to countries and cities in Africa. We did not have ERT but were given Quick Queue passes for Saturday. As it turned out, on Friday the park was fairly empty so it was almost like an all-day ERT session. We had the opportunity to stay for the Howl-O-Scream event that evening, which we also did. While […]

ACE Fall Conference 2014 in Tampa, Kissimmee & Orlando – Prologue: Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort On Wednesday, September 24 I drove to Florida for the ACE Fall Conference at Busch Gardens Tampa and Fun Spot America parks in Kissimmee and Orlando. Before the Conference would get underway on Friday, I met up with Richard Bostic and David Lipnicky for a day and night at Universal Orlando Resort. I had never been to Hollywood Horror Nights at Universal, so the timing of this Conference gave me the perfect opportunity. On Thursday, September 25 we went to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. We started at USF, then took the train to IOA […]

Pacific Northwest Trip 2014 – Part 6: Washington/Oregon–Evergreen, Remlinger, Wild Waves, Enchanted Forest, Oaks, & Seattle

On Friday, August 29 we returned to the U.S. Evergreen State Fair We planned to go to two parks, but on our way we passed by Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, WA, and we saw a coaster. We stopped, of course, and found they had 3 coasters. Zillerator: (DPV/KMG, Galaxi, 1994 or 1996) Previously located at Playland at the PNE where it operated as Zillerator, it now travels with Butler Ammusements. This is a fun coaster. It become Richard’s 850th coaster – 2 rides. Wacky Worm: (Unknown, Wacky Worm,2002 or unknown) This gave a good ride – 1 ride. Orient […]

Pacific Northwest Trip 2014 – Part 5: British Columbia –Three National Parks, Vancouver & Playland at the PNE

Yoho National Park, Glacier National Park (Canada) & Revelstone National Park On Wednesday, August 27 we entered British Columbia as we drove from Banff National Park into Yoho National Park. We stopped at the Spiral Tunnels, a railroad engineering feat, in hopes of seeing a train cross itself. These tunnels were built as a solution to a grading nightmare that caused many accidents due to the steep grade. The train enters a tunnel and then crosses itself, allowing for a much more acceptable grade. There are 2 such tunnels and we stopped for a picnic lunch at the lower tunnel […]

Pacific Northwest Trip 2014 – Part 4: Alberta – Calaway Park, Galaxyland, & Jasper & Banff National Parks

Calaway Park On Monday, August 25 we arrived at Calaway Park in Calgary, AB around 3:30. With only 2 coasters we made the decision to only spend half a day here. We met up with fellow ACE members Michael & Celia Horwood who live nearby. The Vortex: (Arrow, Corkscrew, 1982) Previously named Turn Of The Century and Corkscrew, this standard Arrow corkscrew was pretty smooth and as the largest ride in the park, still attracts a crowd. They give double rides, which although it made the line take longer, was nice – 2 rides (1 double ride). Mini Express: (Zamperla, […]

Pacific Northwest Trip 2014 – Part 3: Montana – Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park On Sunday, August 24 we drove through Idaho to our hostel in Columbia Falls, MT. On the way we saw the most beautiful scenery imaginable of this “Big Sky Country” with mountain, river and lake views around every turn. After arriving at our hostel around 8:00, we went to dinner in Whitefish, MT at The Craggy Range for a very good meal. On Monday we got up early to begin our drive through Glacier National Park, the first of 6 national parks from 2 countries on our tour. Entering the park from the west, we drove along […]

Pacific Northwest Trip 2014 – Part 2: Idaho – ACE Day at Silverwood & North Idaho Fair & Rodeo

2014 1505

ACE Day at Silverwood On Saturday, August 23 we drove to Idaho for the only ACE event of our trip, at Silverwood in Athol, ID. This was the largest park on our trip and with 2 highly regarded coasters, it was greatly anticipated. We purposely planned the trip to coincide with the regional ACE Day at Silverwood to maximize our time here. We were very pleased with the theming, rides and beauty of the park. I will review it by its themed sections. Main Street Steam Engine Train: Historic Engine No. 7 travels in a large loop around the park’s […]
